Bolsonaro arrested after being considered a risk of fleeing
Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The plot was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The police intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
